Laser Cut Stencils - Materials

Laser cut stencils have many advantages over traditional methods of manufacture with few drawbacks; one of the main benefits is the accuracy of 0.2mm. With traditional bladed cutting systems the cutting blade touches the material, which may move or tear when being cut, but the laser beam cuts the stencils from a distance hence there is no material movement. We can laser etch and cut a variety of materials, a good example is cutting silk fabrics where the laser seals the edge of the material and prevents it from fraying.

75 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
Mylar is a durable, very light weight, very flexible material and ideal for laser cut stencils. At this thickness this re-usable polyester film can achieve high detail for body art tattoo and fine graphic stencils. This material is easy to clean and tear resistant up to a point.

125 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
Durable, flexible re-usable polyester film. At this thickness Mylar can achieve high detail on laser cut stencils for bodyart, decorative and graphic stencils. This material is easy to cut with a craft knife or hot knife, it is the ideal choice for decorative wall stencils. It is suitable for most uses.

190 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
This film shares the same properties as the 125 micron but is 60% thicker for longer life. This film is suggested for medium to heavy laser cut stencilling jobs where longer life and larger letters or graphics are required. It can also be used for card stencilling or industrial applications for curved surfaces, such as scaffolding poles.

250 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
This film is hardwearing and rigid but still retains flexibility. For larger industrial use, Mylar at this thickness will last. You can use solvents such as white spirit to clean or scrape the paint off. It can be used for card making as well, but the detail must not be too small. This film is not generally suitable for small, laser cut stencils with intricate detail.

350 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
This thick film is much more hardwearing and rigid but still retains some flexibility. For larger industrial use, this film will last. You can use solvents such as white spirit to clean or scrape the paint off. It can be used for card making as well, but the detail must not be too small. This film is not generally suitable for small, laser cut stencils with intricate detail.

500 Micron Polyester Film (Mylar)
This is the thickest polyester film available on the market, it is very hardwearing and rigid but still retains some flexibility. For larger industrial use, this film will last. You can use solvents such as white spirit to clean or scrape the paint off. It can be used for power washing on to pavements for advertising etc. This film is not generally suitable for small, laser cut stencils with intricate detail.
